At East Coast Camper hire we are safety conscious and provide a no cost EPIRB service for our customers who are travelling on extended inland trips or to remote locations. Our camper trailers are fitted with EPIRB’s to assist the safety of your trip in the event of an emergency. What is an Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB) An EPIRB is an emergency distress beacon which is fitted to the camper trailer that, when activated in a life-threatening situation, assists rescue authorities in their search to locate those in distress. How does a emergency distress beacon work? When a emergency distress beacon is activated, it transmits a signal that is detectable by satellites and overflying aircraft. As the satellites orbit the Earth they 'listen' for any active beacons and report their position to rescue authorities. The EPIRB’s fitted to our camper trailers operate by transmiting a unique code (HexID or UIN) that identifies the beacon when it is activated. In the event that one of our EPIRB’s are activated, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) will contact us, will request your details and intended itinerary to assist emergency services to formulate a search. When should a distress beacon be used? Distress beacons should only be used when there is a threat of grave and imminent danger. In the event of an emergency, communication should first be attempted with others close by using radios, phones and other signalling devices. Mobile phones can be used but should not be relied upon as they can be out of range, have low batteries or become water-damaged. to assist your trip we will provide your itinerary to the emergency services before you depart. The EPIRB fitted to the camper trailer is operated by East Coast Camper Hire and registered directly with AMSA in Canberra. so that we can register the EPIRB individually for your trip we will require a few details of your trip before you leave. Once your information is provided to us and forwarded to AMSA, in the event of an emergency the emergency services have your information which will assist in effecting a search.
